Valley County Court Services
Accountability – Competency Development - Community Protection

Adult Misdemeanor Probation
The goal of Adult Misdemeanor Probation Department is to provide probation guidance and support services while ensuring community safety through accountability. The department works closely with law enforcement, treatment providers and other community resources to aid in this process.
Juvenile Probation
The State of Idaho Legislative policy states the Juvenile Corrections System will be based on the Balanced Approach: Accountability, Competency Development, and Community Protection
Where a juvenile has been found to be within the purview of the Juvenile Corrections Act, the Court shall impose a sentence that will protect the community, hold the juvenile accountable for his/her actions, and assist the juvenile in developing skills to become a contributing member of a diverse community.
It is further the policy of the State of Idaho that the parents or other legal guardians of the juvenile offender participate in the accomplishment of these goals through participation in counseling and treatment designed to develop positive parenting skills and an understanding of the family’s role in the juvenile’s behavior. It is also the intent of the legislature that the parents or legal guardians of the juvenile offenders be held accountable, where appropriate, through monetary reimbursement for supervision and confinement of the juvenile offender, and restitution to the victim of the juvenile’s delinquent acts.
Valley County Juvenile Probation is dedicated to provide supervision to juvenile offenders, providing support services to the juvenile and their family while ensuring community safety through accountability. The department works closely with law enforcement, treatment providers and other community resources to aid in this process.

County detention centers are meant to be utilized typically as a short-term placement to hold juveniles until they appear in Court after taken into custody by law enforcement, or as a sanction after court hearings.
First-Stop Diversion Program
The primary purpose of the Valley County First-Stop Diversion Program is to offer a community based juvenile diversion program in accordance with Idaho Code 20-511.
The First-Stop Diversion program is for youth under 18 years of age, who are charged with a first time, low-level, non-violent misdemeanor offence, including but not limited to: petit theft, willful concealment, low level vandalism, trespassing/unlawful entry, MIP tobacco/alcohol.
This "Restorative Justice" process will create a healthier, safer, involved and empowered community while assisting offenders to develop as responsible citizens.
Through the formation of partnerships with individuals, volunteers, agencies and other resources in our community, a "Hearing Panel" will provide timely and relevant solutions and consequences, including restitution, in a manner which is respectful and empathetic to offenders, their family, the victim and our community.
The panel hearing is a formal meeting involving the victim and offender with their families/supporters, as well as volunteer members of the community. The goal of the restorative justice process is to repair the harm and damage created by the offender and provide reconciliation for all participant. The First-Stop Diversion Program is available to those offenders recommended to the program by the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
