Valley County Road Department
Mission Statement
The Valley County Road Department is dedicated to providing the Patrons of Valley County with quality, cost effective road maintenance and responsible improvements, to insure the safety of the motoring public while maintaining a safe, courteous and professional working environment.
Maintenance/Service
The Road Department maintains and/or upgrades a variety of roadways in Valley County. Roadway summits reach over 7,000 feet, with snow depths averaging 12 feet. Lower elevations not receiving any significant snowfall still require some level of maintenance. A staff of 24 creates the team to perform the maintenance on Valley County roadways and bridges. There are 236 miles of paved surface and 530 miles of gravel or native soil surfaces and 93 bridges. The majority of the roadways maintained are located on the western side of Valley County. There are many roads either public or private that are not maintained by Valley County Road Department. Please call to inquire if roads in you area receive maintenance by Valley County Road Department.
Maintenance of the Back Country Areas is done by a contractor hired and administered by Valley County Road Department. Heavily traveled routes will be graded up to 4 times during the summer and less traveled routes may only be graded once per year. Most of these roads are closed during the winter. Winter access to Yellow Pine and Johnson Creek areas is provided.

Funding
Funding for the Road Department comes from the following sources:
- State of Idaho Highway user fund – this fund source is from gas tax, vehicle registration, and speeding tickets.
- Timber Harvest dollars – has been replaced with Secure Rural School and Community Self-Determination Act funds that will expire in the year 2012.
- Road Development Agreements – this fund source comes from new developments to help with the cost of Capital Improvements to roadways in the immediate area of the development.
Currently no Property Taxes are used to fund the Valley County Road Department.
