Winter Recreation

Valley County is a wintertime mecca for recreation. Many areas are multiple use, meaning they’re open to a variety of recreational modes and equipment, both motorized and nonmotorized. Be aware of your relative speed, communicate with other trail users about passing safely, and obey posted leash laws for dogs.

Nonmotorized users can enjoy miles of groomed trails for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing at Ponderosa State Park, Bear Basin, Jug Mountain Ranch, and Cascade Lake State Park. Please ensure you purchase the right parking pass for each area before embarking on your winter adventure. Feeling nervous? The Payette Lake Ski Club offers Nordic and downhill ski and snowboard lessons for all skill levels. As for backcountry skiing, the powder seems to never run out. Always check weather and avalanche conditions before you go and consider skiing with a guide so you stay safe while having the backcountry experience of a lifetime.

Snowmobilers and snow-bikers can play in seemingly endless powder, accessed via groomed trails. Always obey posted speed limits and make sure that you purchase the correct parking pass and sticker before arriving at the trailhead. Check conditions at the Payette and Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Centers.
