2024 Valley County Noxious Weed Seminar


Join us on May 9, 2024 from 7:30am - 4:30pm at the American Legion Post #60 in Cascade for the 3rd Annual Pesticide Recertification Seminar.

The cost is FREE and is offered at no charge to all professional and private applicators, ranchers, farmers, and gardeners or anyone wanting to learn more about noxious weeks and poisonous plants growing in our pastures, rangelands, public lands, and backyards.

Title: Understanding Product Labels

A walkthrough of the different parts of a product label and how to use them. We will also discuss some background aspects of what is done to create each label as well as a base understanding of the EPA process in creating labels and SDS sheets.

9:00 - 10:00 Bethany Muffly, Idaho State Department of Agriculture Specialist

Title: ISDA’s Rapid Response to Quagga Mussels in the Snake River.

This presentation will outline actions taken by ISDA and cooperating agencies relating to the early detection with subsequent rapid response aimed at eradicating quagga mussels identified in the Mid-Snake River region in September 2023. It will include information on early detection monitoring, pre-treatment surveys, chemical treatments & timing, post-treatment monitoring, as well as the logistics involved in executing a treatment of this scale in such a short period of time.

10:15 - 11:15 Jerome Otto - Corteva Agriscience Pasture & Land Management Specialist.

Title: HighNoon Herbicide-a new tool for Noxious, invasive and poisonous weeds, as well as IAG. This presentation will focus on selecting the proper herbicide to help control noxious weeds. The focus today will be on utilizing HighNoon herbicide and combining other tank mix partners when needed to manage noxious

weeds and poisonous plants on our rangeland and pastures.

11:15 - 12:15 Dr. Bryan Stegelmeir, Poison Plant Research Veterinary Medical Officer.

Title: Noxious Weeds and Poisonous plants and their effect on livestock.

This presentation will discuss and help identify the different toxins found in Noxious weeds and their effects on livestock, animals and people to help us determine the cause and effect of these noxious weeds and poisonous plants in our rangeland and pastures.

Title: Noxious Weeds and Poisonous plants and their effect on livestock, continued.

2:15 - 3:15 Susan Bell, University of Idaho Ext., UI Professor and Extension Educator-Horticulture

Title: Pasture and Range plants that endanger livestock in Southwestern Idaho.

This presentation will assist you in developing a simple overview of the top 12 poisonous noxious weeds and plants detrimental to livestock found in pasture and range in Valley County. These plants - Houndstongue Puncturevine, Leafy spurge, Canada thistle, Poison Hemlock and Western Water hemlock, Buttercup, Sweet clover and red clover, Horsetail, Larkspur, Lupine, Pigweed, and St. Johnswort will be discussed as to their most likely locations. A review of individual characteristics that identify each weed will be highlighted, along with what plant part or parts are poisonous, the amount of the plant needed to poison, and what other plants may have similar toxins that should be considered. The most useful methods of control or eradication will also be discussed.

3:30 - 4:30 Washington on County Weed Superintendent, Bonnie Davis 

Title: Weed Treatment in the Lower Weiser River CWMA

This presentation will focus upon noxious weed treatments throughout the Lower Weiser River Cooperative Weed Management area. Highlights will include widescale treatments for Common crupina and yellow starthistle designated as EDRR weeds in Washington County. Cooperative weed treatments will include as well as the unique strategy for accomplishing these tasks. Landowner participation has always been the shining star of the Lower Weiser River CWMA, and this presentation will include their ownership in noxious weed control and keeping landowners engaged and on the ground treating weeds. Working together is the key to success!
