Skiing & Snowshoeing

Skiing & Snowshoeing

Winter in Valley County is not for the faint of heart. Get out and enjoy the deep days at one of the area resorts, Nordic trail systems, or break your own trail in the wild winter landscape.

Most of the Nordic ski areas offer snowshoe trails, beginner terrain, and lessons, as well as cater to advanced and adventurous skiers with long loops and steep hills. Idaho State Parks, include Ponderosa and Lake Cascade, require an Idaho Park N' Ski pass; Bear Basin and Jug Mountain Ranch require single-day or season passes (available on their websites). Skate, classic, and downhill equipment rentals are available at local businesses and at area resorts.

Brundage and Tamarack both offer high-class skiing and hometown spirit, with lift-served and side-country terrain appropriate for all levels. For a more old-school experience, check out the Little Ski Hill. Uphill travel is permitted at Tamarack and at the Little Ski Hill, with appropriate uphill passes in designated areas.

The valleys are large, and the peaks are high. Backcountry skiers and splitboarders will earn their turns and then some. Payette Powder Guides and Avalanche Sciences Guides both offer a variety of avalanche education events throughout the season, as well as guided backcountry experiences. Connect with local groups and the National Forest Avalanche Centers to learn about current conditions and snowpack.
