Winter Recreation

Valley County is a wintertime mecca for recreation. Many areas are multiple use, meaning they're open to a variety of recreational modes and equipment, both motorized and nonmotorized. Be aware of your relative speed, communicate with other trail users about passing safely, and follow posted leash logs for dogs.

Nonmotorized users can enjoy miles of groomed trails for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing at Ponderosa State Park, Bear Basin, Jug Mountain Ranch, and Cascade Lake State Park. Please ensure you purchase the right parking pass for each area before embarking on your winter adventure. Feeling nervous? The Payette Lake Ski Club offers Nordic lessons for all skill levels. Downhill skiers and snowboarders can ride first to last chair at Brundage, Tamarack, and the Little Ski Hill.As for backcountry skiing, the powder seems to never run out. Always weather and avalanche conditions before you go and consider skiing with a guide so you stay safe while having the backcountry experience of a lifetime.

Snowmobilers and snow-bikers can access hundreds of acres of powder via the groomed trail network. Always obey posted speed limits and make sure that you purchase the right parking pass and sticker before arriving at the trailhead. There are many options for motorized equipment rentals and guided experiences in the area. If you're venturing out on your own, make a smart travel plan, carry avalanche equipment and know how to use it, and check the Payette and Sawtooth avalanche forecasts before you go.
